School system has two new principals

Durham Public Schools has appointed two new principals.

Elizabeth Shearer will take over at Lakewood Elementary School where she has been serving as interim principal since August.

Shearer worked as an assistant principal and program administrator at Hillside High School for the previous three years. She served as principal of E.K. Powe Elementary School from 1997 through 2002 and as assistant principal at Holt Elementary School before that.

Shearer holds a master's degree in special education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor's degree in art from the University of York in York, England.

Another interim principal, Patti Crum, will take over at George Watts Elementary School where she has been since October.

Crum has been a principal intern at Watts and Morehead Montessori and also taught at the Montessori school for seven years.

Before coming to Durham, she taught elementary school in South Carolina for four years.

Crum holds a master's degree in school administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor's degree in science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
