New art gallery's opening next week

CHAPEL HILL - Chapel Hill's newest art gallery features artists whose works have graced The National Gallery of Art, The Getty Center in Los Angeles and the homes of Julia Roberts and John Elway.

Bill Hester Fine Art opened about two weeks ago in University Square. Hester, 68, said he wants to create an "arc of the Americas" gallery, assembling works from artists across the country, and eventually from Latin America as well.

Hester helped open galleries in California and Santa Fe, N.M., but he has strong North Carolina connections as well. His mother lives in Burlington and he went to college at Wake Forest University and law school at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The gallery will hold an opening at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 7, featuring the art of Santa Barbara artists Heebner and Arlene La Dell Sieck and Durham plein-air painter Chris Doyle.
