Truck runs over, injures pedestrian

From Staff ReportsDecember 27, 2005

The driver of a tractor-trailer ran over a pedestrian at an eastern Durham intersection Monday.

Police and medics were called to N.C. 98 and Hoover Road at 8:44 a.m. A man crossing N.C. 98 was crushed by the wheels of a food delivery truck, said Durham police Sgt. David Klay.

Investigators said the pedestrian had just left a convenience store and was apparently running to his residence, which was a short distance away.

The 58-year-old man attempted to run under the trailer of the truck. As he was going under the trailer, the light turned green and the truck started to move forward, according to Durham Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael.

The truck's rear wheels struck the pedestrian, causing severe leg, pelvic and internal injuries. The pedestrian, whose name is not being released at this time, was in critical condition Monday evening at Duke University Hospital, police said.

The driver of the truck, Ray Anthony Lee of Dunn, was not injured, according to a police news release. No charges will be filed against Lee, according to a police news release.
