January 10, 2006

A Wake County businessman was arrested Monday on felony tax charges filed by the N.C. Department of Revenue.

Charles S. Mangum, 54, of 403 Victor Hugo Drive, Cary, was charged with three counts of attempting to evade and defeat state and local sales taxes.

Arrest warrants allege that Mangum tried to evade North Carolina and Wake, Johnston and New Hanover county sales taxes by understating the taxable sales reported to the state Department of Revenue by more than $1.6 million. Mangum owns and operates: Triangle Equipment Co. Inc., in Morrisville; Bobcat of Johnston County Inc., in Garner; and Bobcat of Wilmington Inc., in Wilmington.

Mangum voluntarily surrendered to authorities at the Wake County Public Safety Center on Monday morning. He appeared before a Wake County magistrate and was placed under a $5,000 secured bond. His first appearance hearing is scheduled today.
