School bus crash sends 3 to hospital

February 23, 2006

An accident involving a Wake County Public School System bus carrying elementary students sent three children to the hospital with minor injuries.

At 4 p.m., the bus, with 28 students on board, was headed south on Raleigh Boulevard when it slowed to stop. But the driver of a 1997 Ford pickup truck failed to slow and struck another car that in turn rear-ended the bus, according a Raleigh Police Department news release.

Three students and the driver of the middle vehicle went to WakeMed Raleigh Campus with minor injuries, said Jim Sughrue, of the Raleigh Police Department.

Danny Eugene Washburn, 49, of Raleigh, the driver of the Ford pickup truck, was charged with failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
