Town may name plaza for activists

From Staff ReportsMarch 27, 2006

Town Council members will consider today whether to name the plaza in front of the Franklin Street post office for local civil rights activists Joe and Lucy Straley and Charlotte Adams.

The town's naming committee recommends naming the prominent gathering space "for an ideal, such as 'Freedom Plaza.' "

Plaques honoring people such as the Straleys and Adams could be installed in the plaza, the committee said.

Joe Straley and Adams died recently after years of working for civil rights and against war.
