OWASA, UNC-CH sign water accord

From Staff ReportsApril 12, 2006

OWASA and UNC-Chapel Hill signed a contract Monday for the funding, development and operation of a water reuse system. The OWASA board of directors approved the contract March 23 after receiving public comments in a meeting that night.

The reuse system will enable highly treated wastewater from the Mason Farm Wastewater Treatment Plant to be used for nondrinking purposes allowed under state rules. Operation is projected to begin by the end of 2008.

In the long term, reuse on campus is expected to reduce the community's water demand by 13 percent or more.
