Shooting victim, suspects named

From Staff ReportsMay 2, 2006

— Police identified the victims and suspects in a shooting that occurred during a North Raleigh home invasion Sunday evening.

The resident shot during the scuffle is Michael Lynn Mimnall, 49, according to a news release from the Raleigh Police Department. Mimnall was shot twice in the abdomen.

A suspect in the robbery, whom police found wounded shortly after the incident near T.W. Alexander Drive, is Ellie Melvin Brett, 21, police said Monday.

Brett's accomplice shot him during the robbery, police said. He was treated for gunshot wounds to the neck and left wrist. Police charged Brett with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon and one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

A second suspect has been identified as a 15-year-old boy, according to the news release. He is in custody, and his name was not released because he is a juvenile.

Kevin Jason Rodriguez, 24, a third suspect in the robbery, also was arrested Monday. Like Brett, Rodriguez is charged with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon and one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

The shootings happened shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday. Mimnall's wife answered a knock at the door of their Carrington at Brier Creek apartment and two men pushed their way in, police said. Investigators do not think the couple knew either of the assailants.
