Driver dies when tractor flips over

From Staff ReportsMay 25, 2006

A Chapel Hill man died Wednesday morning when a tractor he was driving flipped and pinned him, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Donald Ray Hilgenberg, 63, of 6421 N.C. 86 South, Lot B8, was working alone in woods off Jones Ferry Road about 7:30 a.m., Capt. Bobby Collins said.

Hilgenberg's 1951 Cub tractor was pulling a log that weighed about 500 pounds up a hill and onto a driveway. Deputies think the weight of the log threw the tractor off balance, causing it to flip backwards.

Hilgenberg died at the scene, Collins said. His body was taken to the Office of the State Medical Examiner for an autopsy, which is standard for unattended deaths.

Collins said the death was an accident and no criminal charges would be filed.
