Fugitive sought in kidnapping is found

From Staff ReportsJune 1, 2006

— A fugitive accused of holding an elderly man hostage for seven hours and later kidnapping his own son was arrested Tuesday after hiding out for more than a month.

Stevie Floyd Gardner, 39, was arrested in Lenoir County. Durham police were seeking him in connection with the kidnapping of his 4-year-old son, of whom he does not have custody.

Gardner also was wanted on charges that he held his former girlfriend's 62-year-old father hostage at knifepoint for seven hours.

Police say Gardner failed to appear in court on the charges and has been in hiding since April, when he was charged with kidnapping his son. Police say Gardner has continued to call his former girlfriend to harass her. His phone calls helped police find him, said Investigator Chad Blanchette.

Gardner was staying in Grifton for most of the past month and denied his identity when police found him, according to court records and Blanchette. His bail was set at $1.2 million Wednesday.
