Unfried goodies from Kemp's

CorrespondentJune 14, 2006

Kemp's Seafood House on Glenwood Avenue has the best Marinated Grilled Shrimp on skewers I have ever tasted. I never try anything else there because I can't get past the delicious grilled shrimp. Their hushpuppies are also absolutely the best. Could you please try to get the recipes?

Kemp's is best known for its piled-high platters of Calabash-style fried seafood, but knowledgeable regulars know that the restaurant's versatile kitchen is just as capable when it comes to grilling, steaming and broiling. Marinated Grilled Shrimp, whose recipe owner Kemp Pendergrass generously shares, is a mouthwatering example.

Pendergrass can't divulge the recipe for the hushpuppies, noting that they're made from a secret recipe formulated especially for his restaurant by the historic Atkinson Milling Company in Selma. Instead, he offers his recipe for Key Lime Pie, a version that is as tasty as it is easy to make.
