Boy killed in chase that ended in crash

From Staff ReportsJuly 4, 2006

— An 11-year-old boy was killed Monday afternoon when the minivan his father was driving overturned during pursuit by state troopers.

State Highway Patrol officials received a call around 1:45 p.m. about a possible drunken driver headed east on Interstate 40 near Benson, and attempted to intercept Ernest Brinson, of Burgaw.

But Brinson would not pull over and sped away at 85 to 90 mph, said Trooper R. B. Maynard.

Brinson's minivan ran off the road, struck the end of a guard rail and overturned before striking a tree, said Maynard. Brinson's son, John, was ejected from the passenger seat and died.

Brinson was taken WakeMed, having sustained head and facial lacerations. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Charges against him are pending, said Maynard.
