Arson charges filed in apartment fires

From Staff ReportsJuly 13, 2006

— Police charged a man Tuesday in two recent Trinity Park apartment fires.

Alfredo Rivera, 36, of 920 W. Trinity Ave. was charged with two counts of second-degree arson, police said. Rivera was in the Durham County jail on other charges when the arrest warrants were served.

The most recent fire took place about 11 p.m. July 5 in a storage unit behind the apartment building at 920 W. Trinity Ave., where Rivera lived with his girlfriend, said Jody Morton, a fire investigator with the Durham Fire Department.

An earlier blaze started in an unoccupied apartment at 916 W. Trinity Ave. about 3:30 a.m. June 24, Morton said. The only person in the building at the time escaped without injury.

Over the past few months, several neighbors reported that Rivera had tried to break into their apartments, investigators said.

Rivera is being held in the Durham County jail in lieu of $40,000 bail on arson, felony assault and attempted breaking and entering charges.
