Clawsons' daughter tells of fear

From Staff ReportsJuly 21, 2006

— The sentencing hearing for Teresa Haws Clawson, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last week in the death of her husband, continues today at the Wake County Courthouse.

Clawson could learn her sentence by the end of the day.

On Thursday, court adjourned in the middle of emotional testimony from 19-year-old Jennifer Clawson, the daughter of Teresa and Bruce Clawson.

Jennifer Clawson said she and her mother lived in fear of Bruce Clawson. She described her father as childish, selfish, controlling and short-tempered.

She said she saved her money to buy a gun from someone at her school when she was 13 and saw her father hit her mother at least once. Tears flowed in the gallery when Jennifer Clawson described him as a volatile man who beat the family's Dachshunds. Court documents describe Teresa Clawson as an abused wife during most of their nearly 20-year marriage.
