Two North Carolina-based troops killed

The Pentagon today announced the deaths of two North Carolina-based troops, one from Pender County.

Marine Capt. Christopher T. Pate, 29, of Hampstead died Friday in combat in Iraq's Al Anbar province.

He was assigned to 2nd Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, Command Element, II Marine Expeditionary Force. The unit is based at Camp Lejeune.

The Defense Department also said that 1st Sgt. Christopher C. Rafferty, 37, of Brownsville, Pa. had died.

He died on Friday in Sharana, Afghanistan of injuries suffered the day before, when his unit encountered small arms fire. Rafferty was assigned to 37th Engineer Battalion at Fort Bragg.
