Cary man, 23, is charged in June drive-by slaying

From Staff ReportsAugust 5, 2006

— Police captured a man Friday who was wanted for murder in connection with a Holly Springs drive-by shooting.

George Damel Young, 23, of 315 Hastings Place in Cary was charged with murder in the June 4 death of Douglas Jamal Mangum, court records show.

Mangum was gunned down on his porch at 210 W. Holly Springs Road, according to a police news release.

Police think Young -- who is thought to be an established Crips gang member -- might have shot the 19-year-old honor student because his shirt was red, the color of the rival Bloods. The victim was not affiliated with any gang and had a clean arrest record.

It was the first slaying in Holly Springs since 1994, police said.

Young was apprehended in Raleigh on Friday by U.S. marshals, and officers of the Raleigh Police Department and Cary Police Department.

Young is being held without bail at Wake County jail.

Raleigh police also arrested James Anthony Batiste Jr., on June 15 in connection with the same killing. He was charged with accessory after the fact of homicide.
