Pearson clears path to open on time

From Staff ReportsAugust 23, 2006

— Though last-minute glitches could have caused delays, W.G. Pearson Elementary will open on time Friday for the first day of school.

Two utility poles near the school's entrance were standing in the way -- literally -- of the school's opening, said Michael Yarbrough, spokesman for Durham Public Schools. The poles were removed Monday, he said.

The magnet school, at 3501 Fayetteville St., was built this year to replace a school that was outdated and in need of repairs.

Contractors still have to build a turn lane in front of the building before the school qualifies for its final certificate of occupancy, Yarbrough said. The turn lane should be complete in several weeks. Meanwhile, traffic officers will help direct school traffic and Pearson will operate on a conditional certificate of occupancy, Yarbrough said.
