Police officer strikes pedestrian with car

— A Raleigh police cruiser struck a pedestrian early Monday near the Black Ties nightclub near New Bern Avenue, according to a police accident report.

The victim, Bisrat G. Micael TesFagiorgis of 4908 Heatherfield Way, was taken to WakeMed Raleigh Campus with a broken leg, police said.

The driver, police officer Matthew Allan McKee, 46, was not injured, police reported.

The accident occurred about 2:40 a.m. Monday on Milburnie Road, near the south entrance of the popular night spot, according to the police report.

Police said TesFagiorgis was leaving Black Ties, which was closing for the evening. McKee was traveling north on Milburnie Road, and TesFagiorgis apparently walked into his path, witnesses told police. Police said TesFagiorgis was not impaired.

No charges have been filed, but the accident is under investigation, and the officer must file a report to the city in addition to an accident report, Sughrue said.
