From Staff ReportsSeptember 30, 2006

— Two men were charged with murder Wednesday night in connection with a 2002 beating death.

Khuram Ashfaq Choudhry, 24, of Bedford Street and Umar Javaid Malik, 22, of Woodway Club Drive were being held in the Durham County jail Thursday in lieu of $200,000 bail each.

Choudhry has a history of violent charges, including robbery with a dangerous weapon in 2003 and assault by pointing a gun in 2004, according to court records.

Rana Shahzad Ahmed, 26, was attacked with a baseball bat in the parking lot of Valley Trace Apartments on Chapel Hill Road after returning from work early Nov. 2, reports said. He died almost two weeks later from severe head trauma. Police described the incident then as a "felonious aggravated assault."

Both suspects were acquaintances of the victim, police said.
