Suspect arrested in fatal beating

From Staff ReportsOctober 14, 2006

— Authorities have arrested a man wanted in connection with an August beating that left a parking attendant dead.

Jerome Gilbert, who worked in a parking lot next to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, died last month from his injuries. Authorities say Damion D'Andre Wilson of 4001 Meriwether Drive was responsible for the beating.

Gilbert was walking with a friend near apartments on Meriwether Drive on Aug. 21 when several men approached them and began arguing about money. Gilbert was severely beaten. He was taken to Duke Hospital, where he died a month later.

Police had previously charged Wilson with assault but charged him with murder after Gilbert died. According to an e-mail message from Cpl. David Addison of the Durham Police Department, Wilson was arrested on the murder charge.

He was held in the Durham County jail Friday without bail.
