Raleigh seeks support on Dix purchase

From Staff ReportsNovember 22, 2006

— The City Council voted Tuesday to seek support from Wake County's members of the state legislature for the city to buy the Dorothea Dix campus.

A panel from the Urban Land Institute has proposed that the city buy the 300-acre property, preserving much of it as park land and developing other portions.

Under the plan, the city would set up a nonprofit to buy the property for about $40 million and fund it through bonds and private donations. The council and the legislature would have to approve the sale.
