Police charge man with sexual assaults

From Staff ReportsNovember 22, 2006

— A 36-year-old man was charged Tuesday with engaging in sexual activity with two girls.

Daniel Martinez Ortiz, of Raleigh was arrested and charged early Tuesday morning with two counts of indecent liberties with a child and one count of first-degree statutory rape after an investigation into claims by a woman that Ortiz had been sexually active with her daughters, ages 12 and 9.

The News & Observer does not publish the names of people reported to be victims of sex crimes. To conceal the identity of the children, the mother's name also is not being published.

According to an arrest warrant, the offenses occurred over a nearly six-month period with both of the daughters. The mother's suspicions prompted her to involve officials, who opened an investigation into the abuse claims.

Ortiz is being held in lieu of $300,000 bail.
