State censures local board of trustees

From Staff ReportsDecember 16, 2006

— The state Board of Community Colleges took the unprecedented step Friday of censuring a local board of trustees over problems involving an athletics program at Blue Ridge Community College south of Asheville.

The resolution cited the trustees' unwillingness to reprimand school President David Sink after a state auditor's report that state money was improperly used to support athletic programs since 2002.

A separate report on the problems detailed how the school's baseball coach ran private camps using public money and facilities.

The school has until Jan. 31 to reach an agreement with community college officials on how much money money it must repay.
