RALEIGH — Jury selection began Wednesday in the murder trial of Cameron Morris, one of the three men charged with killing retired schoolteacher Shirley Newkirk.
Prosecutors think Morris, 19, took part in a weeks-long robbery spree with friends Ezavia Allen and Marvin Johnson before crossing paths with Newkirk on April 28, 2005.
Allen, 20, was convicted this fall of shooting Newkirk, 63, in the driveway of her Dacian Road home. He was sentenced to a life term. Johnson, 19, has not been sentenced but testified against Allen. Police think Allen was the shooter.
Morris was 17 at the time of the shooting and was not eligible for the death penalty because of his age. If convicted, he could receive a life sentence.
