From Staff ReportsJanuary 27, 2007

— Parents and students can find out about programs in Durham Public Schools at the district's Choice Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Hillside High School.

Teachers and students will be on hand to answer questions about magnet schools, advanced curriculum options and other offerings, including the two newest additions to the list of options:

* The district is opening a small gifted and talented magnet middle school at the old W.G. Pearson school on Umstead Street. The school gives preference to rising sixth-graders from W.G. Pearson, R.N. Harris and Club Boulevard elementary schools.

* Starting next year, Mandarin Chinese language classes will be offered at Burton Elementary.

Applications for choice programs are due to the Durham schools Office of Student Assignment by Feb. 23. Parents can call 560-2597 for more information.
