RALEIGH — A 26-year-old man admitted Wednesday that he participated in a robbery attempt that led to the shooting death of Cesar Gutierrez Romo.
Ruben Renteria was sentenced to between 14 years and nearly 18 years in state prison after pleading guilty in a Wake County courtroom to second-degree murder.
Renteria and three other people went to Romo's North Raleigh apartment on Lake Front Drive in December 2005 with the intention of robbing Romo, 25, a drug dealer, said Wake Assistant District Attorney Jacqueline Brewer.
When Renteria threatened Romo with his weapon, it went off and the others began firing and hit Romo. Renteria was arrested in Florida days later; the others have not been found, Brewer said.
