From Staff ReportsMarch 16, 2007

— A man charged in a beating death in August was released from jail Thursday after his bail was reduced from $103,000 to $65,000.

Jameel Lenard Ray of 225 Rippling Stream Road was one of two people arrested in the death of Jerome Gilbert.

Gilbert, 56, was walking with a friend Aug. 21 at an apartment complex on Meriwether Drive when several men started arguing with them about money, police said. Gilbert, a parking lot attendant near the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, was severely beaten and died Sept. 19.

Ray, who was 19 when arrested, turned himself in at Durham police headquarters. Ray has faced a variety of charges in the past, including carrying a concealed gun, resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon.
