CHAPEL HILL — The Police Department is promising to boost its presence in the Northside neighborhood.
"We will try to increase our visible patrol efforts in Northside using existing personnel," Interim Police Chief Brian Curran wrote in a memo to Town Manager Roger Stancil.
Some residents complained last month that police were absent at night when crime is highest. They also said criminals can easily dodge occasional cruiser patrols. They called for more bicycle and foot patrols.
Curran said recently that existing foot patrols focus on covert surveillance, so residents may be unaware of them. Still, he said police could improve their visibility in the neighborhood, both night and day.
"Downtown bike officers have been making runs through Northside as time permits," wrote Curran.
