North Raleigh falls in softball finals

From Staff ReportsMay 20, 2007

Top-seeded Hickory Grove defeated North Raleigh Christian 3-2 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3-A softball championship game on Saturday at Forsyth Country Day.

Hickory Grove (26-3) was the No. 1 seed, and North Raleigh (20-4) was the No. 2 seed.

North Raleigh trailed 3-0 entering the seventh inning, but Paige Woodard started a rally with a double. She took third on Ashley Edwards' single, then Edwards stole second.

Rebecca Gift brought both runners in with a single.

Gift was on third when the game ended.

"I was thrilled with our season," NRC coach John Mitchell said. "We have five freshmen and a seventh-grader on our squad, but we got tremendous leadership from our three seniors.

"It was a very coachable group that learned quickly."

North Raleigh Christian's Gift and Woodard were joined on the NCISAA 3-A all-state team by Melissa Wohlers of Ravenscroft and Niki Tozzi of Durham Academy.
