Substation intruder cuts power to 7,600

From Staff ReportsMay 21, 2007

More than 7,600 Progress Energy customers temporarily lost power in Raleigh on Sunday night when someone tampered with a substation.

Nancy Temple, a spokeswoman for the utility, said someone apparently attempted to break into the substation in the New Bern Avenue area about 10 p.m. to steal copper wire.

An automatic security measure locked the station down, shutting off power. Power was restored within an hour, Temple said.
