Brodhead regrets turmoil at Duke

June 17, 2007

Richard H. Brodhead, president of Duke University, drew criticism for his decision to cancel the 2006 Duke men's lacrosse season and force the resignation of the team's longtime coach, Mike Pressler.

On Saturday, Brodhead issued a statement that said, in part:

"Our students were accused by the community's senior law enforcement officer with no credible basis in fact. ... Duke University was also included in the harm in having to respond to the Durham district attorney's assurances that a crime had been committed and the unprecedented crisis those assurances unleashed. The actions Duke took caused consternation to many in the university family, which I profoundly regret."
