Smithfield officer faces DWI charge

From Staff ReportsNovember 19, 2007

A Smithfield police officer was charged with drunken driving over the weekend in Clayton.

Clayton Police Department Lt. J.L. Owens confirmed Sunday that Cherreka Danielle Wadsworth, 22, of 6005 Buffalo Road, Selma, was pulled over Saturday about 1:45 a.m. at U.S. 70 and Boling Street. The results of her Breathalyzer test were not available Sunday night, but Wadsworth was taken to a magistrate and charged with driving while impaired. She was released into the custody of another individual, Owens said.

Owens said the report filed by arresting officer K.L. Lunger listed Wadsworth as an employee of the city of Smithfield. The Web site of the Smithfield Police Department lists her as an officer.

Neither Smithfield Police Chief Steven Gillikin nor Mayor Norman Johnson could be reached for comment Sunday night.
