Coble floats lower property tax rate

From Staff ReportsJanuary 8, 2008

— Wake County Commissioner Paul Coble on Monday asked fellow board members to consider lowering the 2009 property tax rate to 53 cents per $100 of value at the board's next meeting to offset the recent Wake County tax reassessment.

Currently the rate is 67 cents per $100 of assessed value. Coble's proposal would lower the rate to a level that would raise the same amount of money from property taxes from 2008, making the revaluation revenue neutral.

If approved, the county would decide the tax rate months before discussions of the county's 2009 budget.

The proposal is on the county's Jan. 22 agenda.
