Man shot dead near downtown

January 9, 2008

— A man was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in a neighborhood near downtown Raleigh.

Police responded to the 1300 block of Walnut Street about 5:30 p.m. and found the wounded man. The victim was taken to WakeMed Raleigh Campus, where he was pronounced dead.

Police had not released his name, pending notification of next of kin, but neighbors identified him as Derrick Swinson and said he had been living in the neighborhood with a friend.

"He was a good man," Stacy Neal said. She said Swinson was the father of her 3-year-old son and owned a painting business.

Anyone with information that might assist investigators is asked to call Raleigh police detectives at (919) 890-3555 or CrimeStoppers at (919) 226-2746.
