Drug raid shooting under investigation

From Staff ReportsMarch 29, 2008

A county prosecutor is reviewing the State Bureau of Investigation's report on the fatal shooting of a North Raleigh man during a drug raid at his home.

Wake Assistant District Attorney Howard Cummings said he expects to complete his review next week.

The SBI was called to investigate after Stephen Scott Thornton, 45, was shot Jan. 4 as county ABC agents and Wake deputies raided his home at 5401 Alpine Drive.

Acting on a tip, ABC agents and members of the sheriff's Special Response Team went to Thornton's home looking for an indoor marijuana-growing operation. Officers said they found more than 30 marijuana plants.
