Kitten tests positive for rabies

From Staff ReportsMay 10, 2008

— Durham's Animal Control agency said Friday that a kitten has tested positive for rabies.

The diseased cat was in the Mountainview neighborhood near the Hillandale Golf Course. Animal control plans to go door to door this morning with informational rabies fliers.

The kitten was found as a stray and taken in by a resident of Mountainview Avenue about a month ago, said Deborah Craig-Ray, assistant county manager. The kitten became sick and was taken to a veterinarian. After treatment failed to improve its health, the vet decided it was best to euthanize the animal and have it tested for rabies.

Animal Control is concerned that some residents might have taken in other kittens from the litter. Anyone living in the Mountainview Avenue area who has taken in a stray kitten within the past 60 days is urged to contact Animal Control at 560-0630.
