Bears batter Tigers

— The visiting Shaw Bears hit the Edward Waters Tigers hard, blocking two punts and rushing for five touchdowns in their 55-13 victory in the Willie Gary Classic.

All-American Louis Ellis led the Bears with four unassisted tackles and defensive lineman LaMichael Howell had five unassisted and three assisted tackles.

The Bears (1-1) scored first and never looked back. Tailback Johnny Wooten scored twice in the contest scoring on a seven yard rush in the first half and a one-yarder in the second.

Tailback Raymond Williams added two more scores in the second half as the Bears continued to pull away.

Shaw's Monte Coleman blocked a punt allowing Frederick Holliday to fall on the loose ball setting up a touchdown drive that was capped by a three-yard run by Aaron Ellison. Later in the second half Coleman picked up a blocked punt and returned it 39 yards for the score.

The Tigers finally scored toward the end of the second quarter on an interception making it 13-6 at the end of the half. Edward Waters would only score once more.
