Police look for links in holdup, killing

From Staff ReportsSeptember 13, 2008

— Police said Friday the man who robbed a Wake Forest Road check-cashing business and shot the clerk this week may be linked to other crimes, including a homicide.

Store employee Modesta Fernandez-Lucas, 25, was shot Wednesday night during the robbery of the Mexico Lindo at 4010 Wake Forest Road. Fernandez-Lucas suffered serious injuries in the shooting, Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said, but she was expected to survive.

On Friday night, police spokesman Jim Sughrue said the suspect may be involved in the April 10 slaying of Stephanie Powell Anderson, a clerk at the Wilco convenience store at 1741 Trawick Road. He is a suspect in at least five other 2008 robberies, Sughrue said.

Police released a video and photo from separate robberies in hopes of making an arrest.

WilcoHess has offered a $25,000 reward in the Anderson case.
