3 Raleigh condos damaged in fire

From Staff ReportsSeptember 19, 2008

— A fire damaged three condominiums in North Raleigh on Thursday afternoon, displacing 10 people.

There were no injuries in the fire at 5063 Tall Pines Court, which is off Millbrook Road west of Falls of Neuse Road.

Darren Deis said he was getting out of the shower when he noticed the fire, which he thought started in the condo next door.

"I just pray there's anything left," he said, standing in boots and a pair of jeans -- all he escaped with. Deis clutched a shirt a neighbor had given him, and as he talked with firefighters another neighbor handed him a cold beer.

Deis shares the condo with friends Chris and Michelle Baerman. "I'm just glad nobody's hurt," Chris Baerman said. The three planned to stay with friends. "We'll be all right," he said, but broke down when he recalled his wife's wedding ring was inside.
