DURHAM — Northern Durham and Wake Forest-Rolesville combined for 477 yards in a slugfest won 31-21 by WF-R on Friday night.
The Cougars, who averaged 40.2 points and 259 rushing yards going into the contest, again used their running attack to wear down their opponent.
Trea Jones, Brexton Young and James Harris each rushed for more than 100 yards as the Cougars ran for 393 yards.
Jones led the way with 149 yards and a touchdown.
"I felt good running in the game, and my offensive line was there for me," Jones said.
But it was Harris who was awarded the "unity chain" after the game. The sophomore, who rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns, scored the final touchdown that put the game out of reach with 7:08 left.
"The chain represents the link of every player and coach on the team," WF-R coach Earl Smith said. "Harris stepped it up when Jones went out, and he gets to wear the chain all week and into our next game."
The Cougars took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and looked ready to blow out the Knights (1-3).
But Northern closed to 24-21 at the halftime.
