Orange commissioners to consider building a train station in Hillsborough

Staff WriterOctober 30, 2008

— The Orange County Board of Commissioners will establish a task force to investigate building an Amtrak train station in Hillsborough.

"I think it's a fabulous idea to have a train stop in Hillsborough," Commissioner Alice Gordon said.

Amtrak and the N.C. Department of Transportation have indicated that passenger service in Hillsborough is financially feasible.

The task force will consider funding, supporting infrastructure and potential sites for the station. The board appointed to the task force Bryant Colson, chairman of the Orange County Economic Development Commission; Paul Guthrie to represent the Orange Unified Transportation Board; and Art Mines, who will serve as an at-large member from the county. The county still needs to identify a member from the Orange County Transportation Services Board.

The Hillsborough Town Board already had appointed Elizabeth Read from the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough; Tom Campanella from the town Planning Board; Holly Reid from the Walkable Hillsborough Coalition; and Rick Brewer as an at-large member from the town. The town still plans to appoint someone from the West End Neighborhood Watch.

The task force will begin meeting next month and provide a report to the two boards by February.
