Acts of Faith

February 5, 2009

Jason Baker, left, and Darwin Coburn take a moment to reflect after a tribute to N.C. State University women's basketball coach Kay Yow at Reynolds Coliseum. The two, both NCSU graduates, met at Hillyer Memorial Christian Church about nine years ago when Baker was visiting. Even though Baker did not join the church, their friendship has grown. 'He is like an adopted grandson,' said Coburn, a 1949 graduate. He and Baker get together twice a week: for lunch at The Roast Grill on Tuesdays, and dinner and a movie Fridays. They also go to as many State basketball and football games as possible. On this particular evening, the two were celebrating Yow's life with the Wolfpack family. 'She is really a legend,' Coburn said. 'There are not many ladies like that.'
