From Staff ReportsFebruary 9, 2009

— A Durham police officer arrested two women Saturday after finding a 21-month-old girl in the middle of a street.

The baby's mother, Ann Smith, 20, was charged with one count of child abuse and resisting a public officer, both misdemeanors.

Lisa Dawn Fowler, who is listed as living at the same address, was charged with assault of a government official and resisting a public officer. She is accused of pushing the policeman in the chest as he investigated why the child was in the street unattended.

Each woman was being held in the Durham County jail on Sunday in lieu of $2,000 bail.
