Buckland leads Villains

Megan Buckland scored 15 points to lead Kernersville McGuinness to a 64-33 victory over East Bladen on Saturday in the Class 1-A NCHSAA girls championship.

Buckland added four assists and four steals, winning MVP honors to help the Villains (29-4) claim their fourth consecutive state title. Brittany Cox scored 11 points for McGuinness, which never trailed.

Courtney Melvin scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead East Bladen (26-3), which lost to McGuinness in the state final for the second time in the last three years.

McGuinness outscored the Eagles 11-2 in the first quarter. Whitney Knight scored all nine of her points in the first half, making three 3-pointers to lead the Villains.
