Helen Terry made a go-ahead free throw with 1:27 left as Greensboro Dudley held on for a 60-58 win over Gastonia Forestview in the Class 3-A NCHSAA girls championship Saturday.
Breonna Patterson scored 23 points to lead the Panthers (30-3), who trailed 56-52 with less than three minutes left. Terry, the game's MVP, added 16 points to help Dudley finish the season with a 23-game winning streak and its first state championship.
"We got a win. We won the state title," Dudley coach Kris Britton said. "It may not have been the prettiest win, but we hung in there and persevered. We did exactly what it took to win the game, and that's all I can ask of them."
Shannon Smith scored 31 points on 12-for-37 shooting to lead the Jaguars (27-5), who were making their first appearance in a state final. Ashley Pratt, who finished with 14 points, missed a free throw that would have tied the score at 59-59 with 34.6 seconds left.
Terry added a free throw with 17.9 seconds left, and Smith failed to get off a shot as time expired.
Neither team led by more than six points in the game, which featured 17 ties and 14 lead changes. The lead changed on five consecutive possessions at the end of the third quarter.
