Fort Bragg scales back All-American Week

Deployments put a damper on traditional celebration

The Fayetteville ObserverApril 8, 2009

Fort Bragg's 82nd Airborne Division will hold a scaled-back version of All-American Week in May because of deployments.

"There will not be a Division Review," said Maj. Gen. Mike Scaparrotti, the division commander. "Right now what we are planning to do is a Division Run with the forces that are here and to do a Memorial Service, which is very important to us for those paratroopers that have served this division and given their lives for their country."

President Bush spoke at the Division Review last year. Almost the entire division stood in formation on Pike Field.

The Division Run will be at 6:30 a.m. May 18 at Longstreet Road and Ardennes Street. The memorial ceremony will be 2p.m. the same day at the division museum. A speaker has not been confirmed.

Regimental events will be May 19 and 20. Details are being worked out, said Maj. Virginia McCabe, a division spokeswoman.

The division and the 82nd Airborne Division Association are holding a picnic on Pike Field from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 21 for paratroopers and veterans and their families.

"It will be a somewhat smaller affair than normal when the entire division is here," Scaparrotti said. "That's because we will have the combat aviation brigade and our division headquarters in the midst of a deployment."

The aviation brigade is departing for southern Afghanistan. The headquarters will go in following weeks to eastern Afghanistan. The 4th Brigade Combat Team will go to Afghanistan, probably later in the summer.
