Devils take overtime win

With only seconds left in the first period, Hurricanes defenseman Joe Corvo, bringing the puck up from behind the crease but pursued by New Jersey’s Brendan Shanahan, dumped the puck directly to New Jersey winger Brian Gionta, who put the puck past Carolina goalie Cam Ward.

The Devils lead 2-1 at the intermission. ...

Two quick goals in the first period have the game tied at 1-1.

Zach Parise scored for New Jersey at 6:04.

Only 31 seconds later, Ryan Bayda scored for the Hurricanes, igniting the packed RBC Center crowd.

Parise tipped in defenseman Paul Martin’s shot to put the Devils up first.

Then, seconds later, Scott Walker worked behind the New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur, and passed out to Jussi Jokinen, moving up the slot.

Jokinen whiffed on the puck, but Ryan Bayda fired on net.

The Hurricanes then killed off a four-minute penalty, once again firing up the crowd, after Ryan Bayda was called for high-sticking. Bryce Salvador was bleeding profusely from the face. ...
