Teacher assistant wins top honor

— Lisa Cox of Swift Creek Elementary School was named the 2009 Wake County Teacher Assistant of the Year at a ceremony Monday.

Cox began her career with the Wake school system as a substitute in 2004. She gave up her interior design business, eventually becoming a teacher assistant in a special-education classroom at Swift Creek Elementary.

In addition to taking an active role in the day-to-day instruction of the children, Cox also changes diapers, feeds children who can't manage on their own and "loves the kids as if my own," according to a school news release.
