KX gym is indie again

Staff WriterMay 1, 2009

The gym business is one in which sudden changes are common.

Chains open and close, sometimes leaving members out in the cold.

It's rare for one gym to undergo several changes under the same ownership.

However, that's the situation with KX Fitness.

Co-owner Kim Shackleford started with two independent gyms, opening the first in Apex in 2003 and a second in Clayton in 2006.

After she had a child, she decided it might be easier to become part of a larger organization and entered into a franchise with Peak Fitness in 2007.

It didn't worked out as well as she had hoped, so now the two clubs are independent again.

"Bigger is not always better," she said. "Sometimes it's better to be a small fish."

Shackleford said the split had nothing to do with recent Peak Fitness financial news, including the recent bankruptcy of one Raleigh-area franchisee.

The two KX Fitness gyms are at 908 W. Williams St. in Apex and 11694 U.S. 70 W in Clayton.

The Old Garner Road Diner is open at 1340 W. Garner Road. That site has been home to some well-known Garner eateries, including the Kountry Cafe and Green's Grill.

In Raleigh, the former Hardee's in the North Ridge Shopping Center at Falls of Neuse and Spring Forest roads will become the area's first Woody's Bar-B-Q. The Florida chain says the restaurant will open in mid- to late June.

... Down the street, the Great Outdoor Provision Co. in the Falls Village Shopping Center will close May 25. The company was unable to reach an agreement to renew its lease and plans to consolidate that store with the Cameron Village store for now. Eventually, GOPC may open another Raleigh store to replace the Falls Village store, but no location has been selected.

In Hidden Valley Plaza, Affordable Chic Shops open today. The store space is really a collection of 20 merchants, selling antiques, ironwork, art, furniture and gifts. There are also services such as monogramming and photography plus a small cafe. Hidden Valley Plaza is at 2315 Lynn Road.

OTHER ITEMS: In Raleigh, SarahCare is open, offering day-care services to seniors who are living at home but need assistance during the day. The business is off Lake Boone Trail at 2245 Gateway Access Point. ... In Chapel Hill, the China Chef restaurant in the Eastgate Shopping Center off Franklin Street has closed after 17 years in business. The Thai restaurant Twisted Noodles will replace it this summer. ... In North Raleigh, Entrée Vous at 6021 Poyner Village Parkway near Triangle Town Center has become Entrees4U. The business sells ready-to-heat meals. ... In Raleigh, Sound Station and Security opened a second store at 7105 Glenwood Ave, selling and installing car and home audio systems and accessories. Its first store is in Smithfield. ... In Durham, a Walgreens is under construction at N.C. 55 and N.C. 54. A timeline for opening has not been set.
