'Mona Lisa at the Mona Lisa'

Carrboro gallery owner Jesse Kalisher was in the right place at the right time several years ago when he snapped a photo of a woman who looked strikingly like the Mona Lisa passing in front of DaVinci's famous painting at the Louvre. He recently brought it to the museum's attention, and the Louvre wanted its own print. The Paris museum now has that and 10 other Kalisher photographs in its possession, Kalisher says.

Museums tightening belts

The Mint Museum in Charlotte announced last week that it will begin closing on Sundays because of nose-diving endowments and reduced donations and funding. In Raleigh, the N.C. Museum of Art is implementing other cuts, but it doesn't have plans to reduce operating hours.

New Ava Gardner director

Jessica Meadows is the new director of the Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield. The Kenly native has been executive director of the Johnston County Arts Council. She also worked for NBC-17 WNCN in Raleigh.

Charity dancing, reading

Dancers from a Raleigh studio are raising money for the local nonprofit Books for Kids through a performance next weekend. The City Ballet's spring show will feature characters from children's literature. In a partnership with Quail Ridge Books & Music, the sale of some children's books will go to the charity.
